Navratri ( Navratri Images) is a Sanskrit word which means nine nights, it is one of the major Hindu festival celebrated in India. It is celebrated twice in a year, firstly in the month of Chaitra (April-May) and secondly in the month of Ashwin (September-October), every day witnesses the worship of nine diverse forms of Goddess Durga. Navratri Images can be found on various websites and in the local market.
In West Bengal, during Navratri, Durga Puja is the motive to celebrate while in Gujarat, Navratri festival is celebrated to worship Goddess Jagdamba. However, every area in India rejoices this festival in their personal way but Navratri Festival (Navratri Images)is mainly devoted to the three forms of Goddess Shakti i.e. Goddess Durga, Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati. The custom of worshiping goddesses has been done since prehistoric times in India. Navratri Festival has been around for ages. In Navratri people do fasting and believe its practice of cleansing and purifying mind, body and soul.
In Navratri, devotees only have milk, fruits, potato and avoid grains, it is an assumption that grains absorb negative energy. Common salt is replaced with Sendhanamak (rock salt). During Navratri vrat (fasting), devotees avoid non-vegetarian food. The devotees or follower observe fasting for at least seven to eight days and break their fast on Ashtami or Navami, by offering prayer and carry out KanyaPujan or KanchikaPujan. This involves washing the feet of the young girls and ends by offering food and gifts. This festival is dedicated to the Goddess Durga. The festival is celebrated by fasts, chanting of japas and vegetarianism, all characterizing the power of the goddess.
In Maharashtra, Navratri is celebrated with the determined spirit, people celebrates Navratri with great passion, Goddess Durga also known as Shakti is being worshiped in her avatars for nine days and on the tenth day Goddess Saraswati is worshiped by school children for her consecrations for their education. This day is also considered fortunate to start any new task or to purchase jewelry.
In Gujarat, Navratri is a nine-day cultural and religious show celebrated by the whole public with devotional dances and songs, which is well-known as Dandiya Raas or Garba Raas in which men and women unite the dance ring, grasping together small stylish sticks which are known as dandias that add merriment to the celebrations. The dances generally commence late in the evening and persist until early morning many people’s also perform Jaagran in which devotees wake throughout the night and enchant beautiful songs and prayers to conciliate the Goddess.
People of West Bengal instigate their Navratri celebrations by devoting massive idols of the Goddess Durga with devotional dances and songs, until the tenth day i.e. Dashmi or Dussehra. Many people also organize Ramlila acts in which stories of Epic Ramayana are depicted.
Navratri 2018 Dates – Navratri 2017 will be held on these dates – the Chaitra Navratri will start on 28th of April and ends on 5th of April and the Sharad Navratri will commence on 21st September and ends on 29th September.
